September Central Bank Gold Buying Hit Highest Monthly Total of the Year
Global central banks added 321.2 tonnes of gold in Q3, up 42% year over year and well above the five-year quarterly average. The World Gold Council counted 120 tonnes in reported purchases and estimated another 201 tonnes in unreported buying. Including those estimates, central banks added 675 tonnes in the first three quarters of 2026. Poland led reported purchases, adding 25 tonnes in September and 123 tonnes year to date, bringing its reserves to 673 tonnes. China reported a 23-tonne September purchase, extending its buying streak to 23 months and bringing official reserves to 2,410 tonnes. Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan also added gold, while the Czech Republic continued its steady monthly buying. Russia remained a major seller, cutting its reserves by 72 tonnes year-to-date to support its wartime economy.
